NEW PALTZ – The Town of New Paltz has always believed in diversity, equity and inclusion, but never had written policy about it.

The town board has now formalized its beliefs with an anti-racism statement, said Town Supervisor Neil Bettez.

“I think it is an important thing for us to point out. We all felt strongly about this, but kind of overlooked it, but we wanted people to know that we believe in these things and that we are going to try to strive in all aspects of our work – hiring, laws, policies – to live up to the ideals that we put out there,” he said.

The statement says the board “opposes unequivocally any expression or practice of hate, prejudice, intolerance, or discrimination toward an individual or group” and that it “denounces any form of racism, discrimination, or intolerance as a threat to the safety, health, and well-being of the public.”
