NEW CITY – The treasurer of the Spring Valley Fire Department’s Columbian Engine Company and assistant treasurer of the fire department, has been indicted on four counts of grand larceny and one count of attempted grand larceny related to the misuse of the role in each organization.

Rockland County District Attorney Tom Walsh said Christopher Nau stole $37,932 from the department.

In June 2020, the fire department elected a new chief who appointed a new treasurer and began a full audit of the department. After finding questionable transactions and discrepancies in the treasurer report, the department brought their findings to authorities.

The DA’s office began to investigate in the fall 2020 looking at a number of department accounts dating from January 3, 2016 up to February 2021 that Nau oversaw while treasurer and assistant treasurer.

Any funds donated to the fire department related to the death of firefighter Jared Lloyd in March of this year were untouched and not related to the criminal investigation.

Nau was removed from both of his positions and suspended from the department on August 20, 2020.

Nau was arraigned and released on his own recognizance.
