MONTICELLO – The $6.4 million bridge and culvert replacement project along Route 17B in the towns of Thompson and Bethel has been completed.

The project constructed a new bridge over the Mongaup River in Thompson and replaced the culvert that allows the road to pass over Creamery Brook in Bethel.

Both new structures include 12-foot-wide lanes and 12-foot-wide shoulders to enhance safety for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The State Department of Transportation coordinated construction with local officials and organizations to minimize conflicts with major events, keep traffic moving during the tourist seasons and maintain access to local businesses and attractions throughout the year.

“The Catskills have long been a favorite summer getaway for New Yorkers, and with our state now fully reopened, we will see a return to the past influx of travelers,” said State Senator Michael Martucci (R, New Hampton). “The completion of this infrastructure project signals a wise use of taxpayer resources that will benefit not only residents and second homeowners in my senate district, but also tourists and adventurers who are critical to the local economy.”

Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther (D, Forestburgh) is happy the project has been completed in time for the summer season. “The widening and pedestrian upgrades on this section of 17B will help to ensure that this important artery of Sullivan County is safe, smooth and effective for all of the travelers we welcome to our area.”
