FISHKILL – Four officers and a sergeant needed to be treated at two area hospitals after being violently attacked by a 20-year-old inmate at the medium-security Fishkill Correctional Facility in Fishkill last week. He is serving a six-year sentence on a 2019 assault conviction in Wayne County. He had stabbed a 32-year-old man several times during an assault. While awaiting trial in Wayne County Jail, he attacked and injured three corrections officers.

One officer and a female sergeant suffered broken noses in the Fishkill prison attack.

On Monday, June 14, a counselor at the prison was conducting an interview of an inmate in a group room in one of the housing dorms.

After a short period of time, the inmate began to be unruly, argumentative and failed to follow the counselor’s orders. An officer who witnessed the incident entered the room and ordered the inmate to stop his unacceptable behavior.

The inmate grabbed a chair and attempted to pick it up at which point the officer administered pepper spray, which had no effect.

The inmate continued his violent outburst, swinging his arms wildly with closed fists. The officer tried to get the inmate to the floor, but was unsuccessful. Another nearby officer witnessed the incident, called for help, then entered the room to assist the officer. The inmate instantly struck the officer in the face with a closed fist causing an immediate nosebleed.

A female sergeant responded to the room and administered another round of pepper spray, which again, had no effect.

Two officers were eventually able to get handcuffs on the inmate, which resulted in him becoming compliant.

The four officers and sergeant were transported to local hospitals for treatment of injuries.

The New York State Corrections Officers PBA released a photo of an injured officer saying that is “exactly why we have been critical and so vocal about our state legislators’ failure to recognize how dangerous the inmate population is,” said Mid-Hudson Regional Vice President Chris Moreau. “Obviously, this young man has no regard for anyone. He stabbed a man multiple times, attacked and injured three-county corrections officers while awaiting trial and now savagely attacks staff at Fishkill. I cannot fathom how legislators can sit back, look at this photo, hear this story, and seriously believe that their progressive agendas are not putting the health and safety of the law enforcement community in serious jeopardy.”
