WALDEN – The pandemic put the kibosh on Honor Flights to Washington, DC for area veterans so the Hudson Valley Honor Flight organization wanted to honor them in a different way.

Close to 700 veterans who were scheduled to take those flights in 2020 to now will be honored with law signs reminding their neighbors that “A veteran lives here.”

Hudson Valley Honor Flight Executive Director Jennifer DeFrancesco was among a group to present the first lawn sign to William Taylor, a Vietnam Navy veteran in Walden on Thursday.

“We were trying to think outside the box and what can we do to recognize the veterans on our waitlist. There were a couple of hubs that did this, so we followed suit and did it our way,” she said.

DeFrancesco said they hope to resume the flights in the fall, but that has yet to be determined depending upon the status of the virus.
