KINGSTON – Pizzerias send home their pies in cardboard boxes. And while cardboard is recyclable, used pizza boxes are usually not. Enter the City of Kingston’s Pizza Box Awareness campaign.

Mayor Steven Noble thought it was fitting to launch it Thursday on Earth Day.

“Unfortunately when the pizza gets put in the box it is often greasy and messy and cannot be recycled, so pizza boxes have been ending up in our recycling stream and have been contaminating other types of paper – newspaper, office paper, junk mail – and that has caused contamination to the point where sometimes these loads of paper cannot be recycled and it is all thrown away,” he said.

So, for now, Noble says either compost the boxes at home or dump them in the regular garbage.

Pizza parlors throughout Kingston are participating in this new awareness campaign.
