SAUGERTIES – Police have charged a pedestrian with walking in the wrong direction after he was struck from behind by a bicyclist in Saugerties Saturday night.

The accident occurred at 9:15 p.m. at 355 Washington Avenue Extension in the Town of Saugerties when Caleb Warwick, 36, of Saugerties was walking on the wrong side of the road, walking with traffic and not against it as state law requires.

The bicyclist, Star Berzal, 62, of Malden, was thrown from her bike, striking her head on the pavement, knocking her unconscious.

Police said at the time of the accident, Warwick was wearing dark clothing.

Berzal and her bike were in compliance with state law for nighttime operation, police said.

She was transported to HealthAlliance Hospital in Kingston where she was stabilized before being transferred to Westchester Medical Center where she remains in serious but stable condition, police said.

Warwick told police he was not injured.
