POUGHKEEPSIE – Officials are going to infuse some $30,000 in Community Development Block Grant money to provide grants to local non-profits in the fight against gun violence and the removal of guns from the streets of the City of Poughkeepsie.

Alderman Evan Menist of the second ward worked with the administration to develop this pilot program.

“We know that it is going to take a lot of different partners to make sure that we can address the gun violence epidemic, especially in the City of Poughkeepsie, and the best way to do that is to make sure we are supporting our non-profit partners that are already on the ground doing the work,” he said.

Menist pointed to the city’s SNUG (GUNS spelled backwards) program as one that is working to prevent and intervene in gun violent situations.

“There is a proven and significant impact when local governments fund local programs in ways that put vital funding into preventing fun violence,” said Mayor Rob Rolison.
