Distraction burglary under investigation in Pearl River

PEARL RIVER – Orangetown Police are investigating a diversion burglary that occurred at around 6 p.m. on Thursday, February 25.

A person claiming to work for the water company entered a residence on Buchanan Street in Pearl River and asked the resident to take him to the basement to check the water pipes.

A second suspect then went into the house and stole cash from a bedroom.

The suspect left in a white SUV or van.

The man is described as being six feet tall with a medium build, short black hair and clean shaven. He was wearing dark gray pants, dark gray jacket and a gray hat. He was possibly Hispanic, according to the victim. The second suspect’s description is unknown.

Residents are advised to take the following precautions before letting a worker into their home:

  • Ask for proper identification
  • Check the vehicle being used for company logos
  • Call the utility company and verify that the person works for them
  • If the person suddenly leaves while you are checked on them, call the police.
