MONTICELLO – The State Office of Court Administration would like Sullivan County to demolish its old county jail in Monticello and construct additional courtroom space adjacent to the existing courthouse.
That would run into the millions, money the county does not have to spend.
The district attorney’s office was mandated to move out of the courthouse last year and that space is available along with other room in the existing building, said County Legislature Chairman Rob Doherty.
“The library off of the judge’s chambers is available and has been asked to be made into another courtroom and the court system has turned us down,” he said. “It would be a very easy solution that would cost the county next to nothing, under $100,000 to fix what they are trying to fix.”
The sheriff’s office and jail moved to its new facilities last year and the more than 100-year-old complex sits vacant.
