PEEKSKILL – A car and Amtrak train collided at a Peekskill railroad crossing at Riverfront Green Park on Monday afternoon.
Amtrak spokeswoman Beth Toll said that at around 3:15 p.m., a vehicle was obstructing the tracks north of Croton-Harmon when it came in contact with Amtrak Ethan Allen Express train 291 on its way from New York to Albany.
She said there were no reported injuries to crew members, the 121 passengers on board or to the driver of the car.
The train was delayed for approximately one-hour-and-15 minutes.
Metro-North Railroad spokesman Aaron Donovan said their commuter service was delayed for 20 to 30 minutes.
He said all of the railroad crossing equipment – gates and lights – were working properly.
Amtrak Police are cooperating with MTA Police to investigate the incident.
“This incident is a critical reminder to the public about the important of exercising caution around railroad tracks and crossings,” Toll said. “Amtrak continues to work closely with Operation Lifesaver to communicate the dangers of being inattentive at rail grade crossings and along the railroad right-of-way. Each year approximately 2,000 people are killed or injured in grade crossings and trespassing incidents nationwide.”
