TOWN OF NEWBURGH – An 80-year-old Kingston man was struck and killed while walking on Route 17K in the Town of Newburgh late Friday night, January 15.

State Police identified the victim as John Peda. He was rushed to Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

At around 11:15 p.m., a trooper pulled a car over for a vehicle and traffic violation and as he got out of his patrol car, he heard a vehicle accident behind him. He observed a Nissan Rogue with front end damage on the opposite side of the road. A man, later identified as Peda, was lying on the pavement in front of the vehicle.

The trooper began CPR, notified Orange County 911 and when Newburgh EMS arrived, they took over the first aid measures.

The investigation found the driver of the Nissan was not impaired and there are no charges pending at this time. The investigation is continuing.
