NEWBURGH – The City of Newburgh is expected to apply for a $50,000 grant from the National Park Service to undertake an oral history of African American civil rights in the city.

In conjunction with that, Councilman Anthony Grice would like to revive the issue of African American remains removed from an old cemetery in Newburgh and have never been returned.

“The African American bones that were on upper Broadway that were being interim in New Paltz right now, so I am hoping that after this grant that puts some impetus, if you will, in bring those remains back and possibly looking for a location for those, he said.

Previous discussions included possibly placing the remains in a memorial near the bust of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Marine Drive.

If the civil rights study grant is approved it would be conducted by urban scholars at SUNY Albany.
