WEST POINT – Military officials at the US Military Academy celebrated the beginnings of a large infrastructure project focused on furthering the military academy’s STEM education.
West Point broke ground Friday on the Cyber and Engineering Academic Center, a 136,000 square foot project representing approximately $200 million in federal funding, along with additional private funding for what they’re calling “Margin of Excellence” enhancements.
Academy Superintendent Lt. Gen. Darryl Williams said the project is part of a 15 to 20 year infrastructure overhaul and represents the improvement of the academy’s initial mission since inception: to educate cadets in engineering.
“This new center: the CEAC, will represent a quantum leap in how we deliver engineering education here,” said Williams. “It will modernize our student capabilities with new engineering labs, fabrication spaces, high-bay areas and other state-of-the-art engineering capabilities,” he said.
West Point officials maintain this new center will ensure the academy maintains its status as the premiere engineering education institution for the nation’s army.
