NEWBURGH – Underwater testing has begun for a new Newburgh Landing Pier.

A barge was lowered into the Hudson River from the boat launch on Tuesday morning and that started the process, said City Manager Joe Donat.

“What we are using the barge for is to facilitate the drilling of soil borings and some other geotechnical investigation work, which is being conducted by an outside subcontractor for the city and will ultimately lead to the final Newburgh Landing design and the work to follow thereafter,” he said.

The pier will replace the dilapidated structure first constructed to accommodate the state’s traveling Bicentennial Barge in 1976.
