NEW WINDSOR – About two hours after the polls closed Tuesday night, incumbent Democrat James Skoufis was still unsure if he’d return for another term to his seat in the 39th state Senate District.

The results were staggered with early voting and absentee ballots, but Skoufis was hopeful he could defeat Republican Steve Brescia.

“Our internal numbers were very cautiously optimistic that we were in a good place,” he said. “But we need to see more numbers.”

As of early Wednesday morning, the State Board of Elections reported Skoufis had 50 percent of the votes counted to Republican Brescia’s 44 percent.

If Skoufis returns to Albany, the pandemic and the economy will be his main priorities.

“The focus must be protecting the public’s health from the virus. We are seeing alarming numbers throughout the country and now in New York now,” he said. “And then concurrently building our economy. Anyone who is not focused on those two things is not doing their job over the next term. So that’s what I’m going to be focused on like a laser beam.”
