MONTICELLO – Monticello’s George L. Cooke Elementary School has been closed since yesterday (Tuesday) and remains shuttered today (Wednesday) because a staff member tested positive for COVID-19, Superintendent Dr. Matthew Evans said.

He said the staff member had contact with a number of students and staff at work on September 24 and 25.

Evans said the district has been in close consultation with Sullivan County Public Health Services and are providing the agency with information on the students and staff who were in contact with the infected staffer.

He said the county agency will contact any individual who was exposed and follow up with testing and medical consultation.

Custodial staff has disinfected the school three times since the school closed on September 25.

“We will consider reopening the school once we have determined how many students and staff will be quarantined while they await testing,” Evans said.
