Middletown man charged with shooting Port Jervis teens

PORT JERVIS – A 21-year-old Middletown man has been arrested and charged with shooting the two 16-year-old Port Jervis boys on Monday night.

Mario Mateos of 201 Wickham Avenue was charged with two counts of armed assault and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, all felonies.

Mateos was located in a residence on Barcelow Street in Port Jervis where a firearm was recovered.

He was arraigned and remanded to the Orange County Jail in lieu of $300,000 cash bail, $600,000 bond or $1 million unsecure bond.

Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler said the case will be presented to a grand jury, which could consider additional charges.

The maximum sentence for first-degree assault is 25 years in state prison.

“Violence on our streets cannot be tolerated and the prompt apprehension of this defendant is a credit to the professionalism of the City of Port Jervis Police Department and the agencies that assisted them,” said Hoovler.

Port Jervis City Police Chief William Worden said, “We pray for the speedy recovery of the two young men who were injured during this incident and are committed to working together with our partners in the community and law enforcement to diligently prevent this type of violence on our city’s streets and vigorously hold those who perpetrate these violent acts in our community legally accountable for their actions.”

Port Jervis City Police are continuing the investigation with the assistance of the New York State Police, Town of Deerpark Police and the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
