Man accused of tearing wings from butterfly art

SAUGERTIES – Police Chief Joseph Sinagra has announced the arrest of 43-year-old Saugerties resident Vincent DeBellis on the felony charge of Criminal Mischief for an incident that occurred Monday morning just before 2:00 am.

According to Sinagra, his officers responded to reports of an intoxicated man throwing items at vehicles on Partition Street in the Village of Saugerties at 1:57 am on Monday.  Arriving officers recognized the man and took statements from witnesses.  According to

police, DeBellis was observed by witnesses tearing the wings off the Spirit of Woodstock butterfly, a piece of artwork currently on display in the Village of Saugerties.  The artwork is part of the Fluttering Around Saugerties Chamber of Commerce Artist display.

DeBellis was taken into custody and processed at Saugerties Police Headquarters on the Felony charge of Criminal Mischief in the 3rd Degree. DeBellis was then released on an appearance ticket returnable to the Village of Saugerties Justice Court on August 31 to answer his charge.
