In recent months, real estate agents have reported a huge rise in the number of New York City residents looking to move to the Hudson Valley. It is believed that is down to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, with people of the city decided to abandon life in high rise apartments and move to Ulster, Orange Counties and Duchess. To be honest, though, who could blame them?

There are no more keeping kids cooped up in apartments – instead, they can roam free, with just a mobile phone tracker to keep an eye on their whereabouts. You will not feel on top of your neighbours all the time, and the difference in air quality is incredible. But that is not all that the Hudson Valley has to offer.

If you are one of the city people who are thinking about moving to this wonderful little corner of America, here are some of the things that might help you to make your decision.

It inspires people

Hudson Valley has inspired countless numbers of writers, painters, musicians, actors, artists and other creatives over the years. Some notable celebrities that were born in the Hudson Valley include:

  • James Patterson (bestselling author)

  • Peter Bogdanovich (actor and director)

  • Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi (reality TV star)

  • Emma Roberts (actress)

  • Dave Price (weatherman and TV show host)

  • Elisa Donovan (actress)

  • Rufus Wainright (musician)

  • Joseph Mazzello (actor)

  • Laura Branigan (singer)

  • Jimmy Fallon (comedian)

It is perfect if you love the great outdoors

If you love the great outdoors and are into sports, the Hudson Valley is the perfect place for you. Not only do you have the Hudson River and the Long Island Sound, but plenty of other smaller streams and lakes are dotted around for you to get your fix of water sports, such as kayaking, boating and canoeing.

The state parks, which include Bear Mountain, Harriman and Lake Taghkanic, as well as the many campsites and reserves, offer boat launches and fishing.

If mountain biking is your thing, then you will not be left disappointed. There are thousands of miles of waterside, wooded and mountain trails throughout the Hudson Valley, giving you views of spectacular landscapes and a chance to get up close and personal to the wildlife of the area.

It is easy to commute to the city

More and more people have jobs in which they can work from home or remotely at least some of the time, but if you don’t, and you do need to head to the office in the Big Apple, the commute is doable. It is about 120 miles, so it takes a couple of hours at tops, making it a flexible place to live.

The living costs are lower

Living in New York, you may be used to high living costs, so you will be pleasantly surprised to find out that on average, the living costs in the Hudson Valley are around 2.9% lower than the national average. This, of course, may be down to the fact there are 440 times fewer people living here than in NYC, meaning less competition for land, jobs, education and healthcare.
