Bethel man turns himself in following Monticello shooting

MONTICELLO – A Town of Bethel man was committed to the Sullivan County Jail Wednesday night after a shooting incident in the Village of Monticello.

Following an earlier dispute, Richard Olsen, 34, of Bethel, allegedly fired a .22 caliber rifle from a vehicle at another car in which the victim was riding.

That 30-year-old Monticello man was in the back seat and took a gunshot to his back when Olsen allegedly fired his rifle with a large capacity magazine several times while on Jefferson Street near the intersection of Raceway Road.

The victim was transported to Orange Regional Medical Center in the Town of Wallkill by Mobile Medic Ambulance where he was treated and released.

A short time after the incident, Olsen called the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office and expressed his desire to turn himself in. He was located at his home on Harden Road in Bethel, taken into custody without incident and turned over to Monticello Police.

The rifle he used was also recovered.

Olsen was arraigned via video before Judge James Farrell with bail set at $30,000, $60,000 secured insurance bond or $180,000 bail bond.

Also assisting Monticello Police were State Police and Monticello Fire Department EMTs.
