ALBANY – School board elections and budget votes are scheduled to be held by mail because of the coronavirus with ballots to be mailed to all district residents to be returned by June 9.

There is one problem, though. The company hired by dozens of districts to print the ballots and mail then ran short of paper and envelopes and that is impacting school districts around the Hudson Valley. Ballots may not reach voters in time.

As a result, State Senator Peter Harckham (D, Mt. Kisco) has introduced legislation that would extend the date for the votes until June 16.

“There is one company that had been hired by a bunch of the school districts and we heard it could be 20 to 30 school districts that have been impacted by this, and through no fault of their own, they ae at risk of not being able to comply with the executive order on the school election,” he said.

If Harckham’s proposal does not make it through the legislature, he said the governor should issue an executive order pushing the school board and budget voting back by one week.
