PORT JERVIS – Threats to public safety arrived on Ball Street in Port Jervis Saturday evening, and not in virus format.

Multiple gunshots were specifically directed at a man who had been standing in a Ball Street yard, just before 11 p.m.

Port Jervis Police Chief William Worden on Sunday said that PJPD officers responded to a report of gunshots fired at approximately 10:45 p.m.  The location was reported as a residential section near the intersection of Seward and Pennsylvania Avenues.

Worden said a police investigation revealed that a suspect came from an adjacent yard and discharged multiple handgun rounds at a man who had been standing outside a Ball Street residence.  The victim, who was not injured, sought cover inside the residence.  The suspect fled the scene on foot.

Neighbors, who wished to remain unnamed, said the suspect moved from Ball Street to nearby Hammond as they saw police, including a K-9 officer, searching neighboring backyards.  The area is in the same neighborhood where several shots were fired at a different residence in September of 2019.

Worden said Port Jervis Police officers, with assistance from State Police and a canine unit from the Greenville barracks, searched surrounding neighborhoods in the 4th Ward section of Port Jervis for the suspect.

PJPD Detectives interviewed witnesses and processed the scene during the overnight, and were on scene Sunday morning.

No arrests had been made by early Sunday afternoon. The investigation is on-going by City of Port Jervis Police Detectives.  PJPD is asking anyone from the public with information about this incident to please contact the Port Jervis City Police Department at 845-856-5101.
