MONTGOMERY – Orange County Legislature Chairman L. Stephen Brescia is apparently going to run on the Republican line for State Senate against incumbent Democrat James Skoufis of the Town of Woodbury.

Brescia is also mayor of the Village of Montgomery.

He could not be reached for comment Friday evening; however, he has had election petitions printed with his name and position being sought that he will circulate to secure signatures of registered Republicans so that he may appear on the November ballot.

Brescia has been mayor of Montgomery for 30 years and has served on the county legislature for 26 years.

Skoufis is a first-term state senator, who previously served as a state assemblyman.

“With legislative session ongoing, I’m hard at work for my constituents, but look forward to the campaign later this year,” said Skoufis. “I welcome the opportunity to contrast my strong, bipartisan record with double-dipping, lifetime politician Steve Brescia who moonlights on the IDA as Orange County’s king of corporate welfare.”
