NEWBURGH – The Orange County Industrial Development Agency, Thursday, gave its final approval to a modified payment-in-lieu-of-taxes agreement with the owners of the Danskammer electric generating plant in the Town of Newburgh.

The previous six-year PILOT was set to expire at the end of 2020, but the new one was extended to 2025.

The extension has been agreed upon by the local taxing entities, said IDA CEO Laurie Villasuso. “They did get approval from the town and the school district – the Town of Newburgh and the school district of Marlboro. They approached the IDA to basically galvanize what the town and the school district had already agreed to, and in that agreement, they also agreed to waive the $900,000 overpayment that was a result of some confusion about the pilot language and a special district charge cap,” she said.

The owners of Danskammer want to build a new facility on the same site as the existing one. That has been met with opposition by some local residents, community groups, environmental organizations, and local governments.
