Unemployment highest in area cities

MID-HUDSON – The cities of Mount Vernon, Newburgh and Poughkeepsie ranked the highest in terms of unemployment in December 2019, according to statistics from the state labor department.

The Hudson Valley unemployment rate came in at 3.7 percent; Mount Vernon experienced 4.9 percent while Newburgh had a 4.8 percent rate, and Poughkeepsie came in third with 4.7 percent joblessness.

Other rankings included:

  • Town of Haverstraw: 4.6 percent
  • City of Yonkers: 4.6 percent
  • City of New Rochelle: 4.5 percent
  • Town of Newburgh: 4.2 percent

The lowest rate in the Hudson Valley in December was 3.1 percent, which was experienced in the towns of Monroe, Ossining, Mamaroneck, Ramapo, and Rye, and the Village of Port Chester.
