NEW WINDSOR – State Assemblyman Colin Schmitt (R, New Windsor) announced Tuesday that he will introduce legislation to fully repeal the criminal justice changes and invalidate any actions already commenced under the new “dangerous standards” prior to the repeal being passed.

Schmitt, who voted against the changes, pointed to the recent Stony Point incident in which an illegal alien who is not licensed to drive mowed down and killed a mother as she walked along Route 9W recently.

The suspect was released without bail and Schmitt suspects he is back on the road driving illegally.

The freshman lawmaker said the changes are not just limited to the elimination of cash bail for serious crimes but include countless provisions of “grave concern.”

The changes include granting a criminal defendant access to a crime victim’s home, providing a criminal defendant with the names and contact information of all potential witnesses including first responders and requiring law enforcement to have a case ready for trial within 15 days after an incident occurs regardless of how heinous the crime may be.

“To protect our families and communities we must fully repeal the dangerous criminal justice reforms now,” he said. “My legislation would do just that along with invalidating any actions already commenced under these new dangerous standards prior to the repeal being passed.”
