EAST FISHKILL – Police Chief Mathew Orsino is retiring on December 30 after 22 years with the East Fishkill Police Department.

He has been chief for the past two years.

Town Supervisor Nicholas D’Alessandro said Orsino’s efforts have focused on transforming the town’s department into “a 21st century model with an emphasis on transparency through overhauling the department’s policies and procedures.”

The supervisor said under Orsino’s leadership, the department has engaged in a more collaborative approach to town-wide initiatives including community policing and worked with the town board to restore the department’s canine division.

D’Alessandro said the town will initiate a recruitment process for a new chief, which he anticipates will take several months.

The police department is also facing another retirement – Lt. Jon Wood will also leave the department on December 30. D’Alessandro said wood has been a leader in department training with special expertise in firearm training.
