CARMEL – A Lake Carmel woman was killed early Sunday in a tragic mishap on Interstate 84 in the Town of Southeast.

State Police identified the victim as Ashley Permijo, 32, a 2005 graduate of Carmel High School.

State Police Public Information Officer Trooper Denis Schwuchow said the incident took place at 5 a.m. when Permijo “abandoned her vehicle on the shoulder of the interstate due to running out of gas. She crossed over the center median of the interstate and ended up in the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer rig. Due to poor visibility, the driver was unable to avoid striking the woman, who was pronounced dead at the scene.”

Brewster Fire Department and Rescue Squad personnel assisted troopers with traffic control until accident reconstruction was completed.

Trooper Schwuchow said the accident investigation was continuing.

The truck driver was not summoned by police and remained at the scene.
