Police investigate death of local woman

PORT JERVIS – Investigators are trying to piece together the circumstances that led to the death of a local woman in the City of Port Jervis.

Police were called to 25 East Main, a three-story building that houses eight apartments at around 6:52 p.m. They found Heather Aleman, 32, an occupant of apartment 2, dead. The apartment was declared a potential crime scene for forensic processing. Initial EMS calls Monday night indicated she was a victim of an assault, but Chief William Worden said on Tuesday that no foul play was suspected.

An autopsy was to be performed by the Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office with no cause of death declared pending laboratory results, which Worden said could take four to six weeks to complete.

City Police are being assisted in the investigation by State Police, Orange County District Attorney’s and Medical Examiner’s Offices, and Town of Deerpark Police.

Four years ago, Aleman was arrested by State Police at Wurtsboro on charged of grand larceny and identity theft. She was in possession of a stolen debit card and made several unauthorized charges in the Middletown area.

She did not return to court to answer the charges and a bench warrant was issued by Sullivan County Court for her arrest.
