Sullivan County WWII hero Currey dies at 94

SELKIRK – World War II hero Francis Currey, a native of Loch Sheldrake, died on Tuesday, October 8. He was 94.

Currey served in the US Army and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star, three Purple Heart medals, and the Belgian Order of Leopold.

One week after graduating from Hurleyville High School in 1943, he enlisted in the Army.

An automatic rifleman with Company K, 120th Infantry, 30th Infantry Division, Sgt. Currey and his platoon were assigned to defend the small Belgian town of Malmedy with little more than small arms. Facing a number of German tanks intent on flanking his battalion, Currey repeatedly braved enemy fire to inflict heavy losses on the enemy, rescued five American soldiers that had been pinned down and repelled the enemy advance.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 12 at Babcock Funeral Home in Ravena with interment to follow in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in South Bethlehem.
