KINGSTON – Ulster County Legislator Joseph Maloney has introduced legislation to ask the state to allow the county to dissolve or decommission its Industrial Development Agency.

Maloney, who supports State Senator James Skoufis’ investigation into IDAs statewide, said people deserve to know where their tax dollars are going and he terms as “frightening” the lack of transparency that exists with IDAs.

“We are under the impression that people will only want to do business here if we give them a handout and 99.9 percent of the businesses that are functioning in Ulster County right now do it without any help and there are too many consultants getting money from the IDA; there are too many standalone hotels,” Maloney said.

Maloney said there are county and state loan and grant programs that can assist businesses that really need financial aid.
