ALBANY – Legislation to allow domestic violence victims to report an incident of abuse to any law enforcement agency in the state was signed into law by the governor.

The measure was sponsored by Senator David Carlucci (D, Nanuet) and Assemblyman Kenneth Zebrowski (D, West Nyack).

Prior to this bill, persons were only able to file an incident of domestic abuse to the police in the jurisdiction where the incident occurred. The lawmakers said hopefully the new bill will lead to an increase in reporting of domestic violence, encouraging survivors to come forward.

It will also ensure that survivors are able to leave the area where their abuser is located in order to get to safety.
