NAPANOCH – Corrections officers assigned to the package room at Eastern Correctional Facility in Napanoch found 5.3 ounces of synthetic marijuana, commonly known as K2, in a package mailed from Brooklyn to an inmate incarcerated at the maximum security prison.

On Friday, July 26, the prison received a package for an inmate raising the suspicions of an officer in the package room. Three cans of beans appears to have been altered and when they were x-rayed, they didn’t appear to be right and when they were opened, officers discovered a bundle wrapped in cellophane in each can. Inside were green leafy substances that tested positive for K2.

The investigation is continuing.

“Our members work diligently to stop the flow of contraband that is flooding our facilities,” said Michael Mazzella, Mid-Hudson regional vice president of the New York State Corrections Officers PBA. “Contraband seized inside prisons is at historic levels but unfortunately not all contraband can be discovered.”

Mazzella said that is a prime example of why a secure vendor program is needed in each prison. “There is simply no legitimate reason to not have a vendor program that will be secure and create a safer work environment for our members.”
