VAILS GATE – The almost 11-acre former Safety Kleen Dry Cleaners site on Temple Hill Road in Vails Gate will be remediated shortly.

The property is listed as a Class 2 site that represents a significant threat to public health or the environment.

The site is a shopping plaza with two large retail buildings that each houses several businesses including a grocery store, a pizza restaurant and a nail salon.

The primary contaminants of concern are chlorinated volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are often associated with dry cleaning. Those contaminants are present in the soil and groundwater located near where the site’s former dry cleaner operated.

The cleanup activities will be performed by The Rosen Group with oversight by the DEC.

Remediation will include excavation and removal of some 100 cubic yards of contaminated soil and replacing it with clean soil, paving surface areas, and treating contaminated groundwater through enhanced biomediation by injecting carbon into subsurface wells.
