KINGSTON – State Police are handing the investigation into the crash of two Ulster County Sheriff’s Office vehicles that occurred around 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 11.

The incident occurred on Lucas Avenue in the Town of Marbletown.

A preliminary investigation by Ellenville State Police found that an unmarked sheriff’s vehicle, driven by Deputy Sheriff Robert Shamro stopped a car for a vehicle and traffic law violation. During the stop, the deputy had the driver step out of his car for further interview.

A marked sheriff’s car, driven by Corrections Officer James Wenzel, failed to observe the other two vehicles striking the unmarked sheriff’s car in the rear pushing it into Deputy Shamro and the driver of the other vehicle.

All three were transported to MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie with non-life-threatening injuries.
