TOWN OF SOUTHEAST – A motorcyclist is lucky to be alive after being struck by an 18-wheel tractor trailer truck on Interstate 84 in Southeast on Memorial Day.

The noon-time crash took place in the eastbound lanes when the cyclist, who was riding in a pack with others out for a holiday run, was struck by the big rig tossing him onto the shoulder of the highway.

Calls made to the Putnam 911 Dispatch Center sent Brewster Fire Department and EMS to the scene. A request was also made for a medivac helicopter; however, when the victim was examined by the first responders it was determined his injuries were not life threatening and the chopper was canceled.

The man was taken to Danbury Hospital by ambulance.

Assisting at the scene were paramedics from the EM STAR Ambulance Company, Brewster FD Fire Police and the Putnam Bureau of Emergency Services. State Police handled the investigation.

Traffic was backed up for miles along I-84 through eastern Putnam as well as I-684 northbound into Westchester for several hours.
