ALBANY – Assemblyman Jonathan Jacobson (D, Newburgh) hopes to challenge a gubernatorial veto that prevented the state from waiving a $13 million fine against the Enlarged Newburgh City School District that resulted from a clerical error.
Jacobson said the veto was unfair.
“This veto makes no sense coming from a governor who says he is a proponent of public education,” Jacobson said. There is no logical reason for such a veto since the governor signed an identical piece of legislation this past August to benefit the North Syracuse Central School District. I am confident that Senator (James) Skoufis and I will pass legislation in early 2019 to take the appropriate steps to rectify this situation.”
Newburgh Mayor Torrance Harvey, who is a teacher in the Newburgh school district, was critical of the veto. “This is unacceptable Governor Andrew Cuomo! You will be held accountable for this and that damn water contamination in our city! Yeah I said it!”
Cuomo also vetoed legislation that would have provided financial amnesty to the Chester Union Free School District for a $3 million clerical error.
