Carmel woman seriously injured in hit and run

Emergency responders assist the victim by transferring her from
an ambulance
to medivac helicopter in downtown Carmel.

CARMEL – A Carmel woman attempting to cross Route 52 in Carmel
in front of T&J Auto Service just south of the Shop-Rite Plaza was
rundown by a vehicle Thursday night that sped away and fled the scene.

The victim, identified only as a 69-year-old resident of Carmel, suffered
numerous broken bones as well as head injuries and internal trauma and
was rushed by a medivac helicopter to Westchester Medical Center where
she was admitted to intensive care.

Carmel Police are investigating the crash with the assistance of the Putnam
Sheriff’s Office.

The incident took place around 5 p.m. at the height of the evening rush
hour when authorities said a blue colored Volvo struck the woman and took
off. Police shut down Gleneida Avenue near the crash site resulting in
massive traffic tie-ups along the main artery in the county seat.

Police Chief Michael Cazzari has asked anyone witnessing the tragedy or
with information that could assist police locate the driver of the hit
and run vehicle to contact Carmel Police at 845-628-1300 where all calls
will be kept confidential.

Also assisting at the scene were members of the Carmel Fire Department
under the command of Assistant Chief Matt Lubera, members of the Carmel
Fire Police, Putnam Assistant Commissioner of Emergency Services Robert
Lipton and a representative of the Bureau of Emergency Services.
