NEW ROCHELLE – Fire claimed the Gothic-style Wildcliff cottage in New Rochelle on Monday.
Mayor Noam Bramson said an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the blaze. The city police, fire, public works and parks departments worked “in horrendous conditions to protect and secure the surrounding neighborhood,” he said.
Wildcliff, built in 1855, was designed by architect Alexander Jackson Davis. It was gifted to the city by the Julius Prince family in 1940.
After being used for city offices, the building has housed not-for-profit groups and functions.
The interior has not been used for years while the exterior was restored with funds from the sale of adjacent property.
It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002 and is a locally designated site.
