NEWBURGH – Countless motorists got stuck on slippery roads during and after Thursday’s late afternoon and evening snowstorm that dumped a foot of snow on the region and Assemblyman and state Senator-elect James Skoufis is not happy with the state response.
“While I understand this is a lot of snow for mid-November, the state DOT’s response to this predicted storm is embarrassing and unacceptable,” he wrote on Facebook. “Where was the preparation? Where are the plows?”
Skoufis said he in contact with the DOT and will be demanding answers and full accountability.
“This is an issue with the top levels of the DOT and quite frankly the state government. Something went wrong here because this has not happened before. We have had snowstorms during rush hours many, many times over the years that I have been in the Assembly and I have not seen anything quite like what happened (Wednesday).”
The senator-elect said the problem “is in no way a reflection of the hardworking people who are out clearing our roads, but this is a failure from the top.”
Skoufis’ Facebook page exploded with reaction after he posted his remarks. “Why did the idiots at the top wait until the storm was almost over to declare a state of emergency?” one woman wrote.
On man wrote that he was stuck on Route 17 for over five hours Thursday night. Another woman wrote that “this was a huge ball drop on the part of the DOT.
In defense of the plows, one woman wrote, “From what I read, it was all the car accidents that blocked the plows from being able to get around to do their jobs.”
