NEW WINDSOR – Not only are there four hotels in various stages of development in the Town of Wallkill, there are two others on the drawing boards in the Town of New Windsor.
Banta Hospitality plans to knock down its former Steak and Stein restaurant on Union Avenue in New Windsor to make way for a four-story, 93-room Holiday Inn Express.
The company is seeking a sales tax exemption on building materials, mortgage filing fee exemption and a PILOT agreement from the Orange County Industrial Development Agency for the $14 million project, which is slated to open in early 2020.
Another hotel, near the Hilton Homewood Suites at Stewart Airport, was proposed some 10 years ago, when it received IDA financial benefits. It was never constructed.
The IDA board pulled those approvals on Wednesday, said agency Chief Operating Officer Laurie Villasuso.
“It’s important that they do that because we have a lot of new regulations, a lot of new oversight and the IDA itself is very different now in terms of making sure that local labor is there, and the job figures are met and throughout the course of construction and operation we have a lot of oversight that didn’t exist all those years ago,” Villasuso said.
A new application is expected to be filed for the airport hotel so that project can move forward now, said Villasuso.
The new Banta hotel proposal will go before a public hearing before the IDA board acts on the financial request.
