CARMEL – A convicted drug felon from Lake Peekskill with six prior felony convictions was sentenced to 24 years in a maximum security penitentiary Wednesday by Putnam County Judge James Rooney.
Wesley Miles, 39, was convicted by a Putnam County jury of multiple felony
counts of criminal sale and criminal possession of controlled substances
in September.
Miles, described by Putnam District Attorney Robert Tendy as a “drug dealer,” was arrested for narcotics trafficking throughout Putnam County.
In 2013, an undercover officer with the sheriff’s office developed information that Miles, a parolee from state prison, was conducting street level sales of crack cocaine in Mahopac. The deputy infiltrated the operation and purchased quantities of the illegal contraband from the 35-year-old Miles on several occasions.
Prior to that arrest, Miles had 12 prior contacts with the criminal justice system in addition to the convictions – all related to drug sales.
Tendy called the arrest and conviction a “great collaborative effort” involving the district attorney’s office, the sheriff’s office, Putnam Countywide Narcotics Enforcement Unit, Putnam County Corrections Department and the State Police Crime Lab.
At sentencing, Assistant District Attorney Breanne Smith told the court
that “Wesley Miles is the definition of a recidivist career criminal.
Each day he is in jail is one less day his drug dealing can victimize
our community.”
Judge Rooney also admonished Miles. “Drug sale is not a victimless crime. It is profiteering on the misery of others. Your record up to now can be characterized as having been ‘turn-style justice’.”
