Cannon Sreet, looking east

POUGHKEEPSIE – New double yellow lines on a section of Cannon Street to accommodate new ‘on-street’ parking have created what some drivers have called a “confusing” traffic pattern in Poughkeepsie.
City DPW Commissioner Chris Gent said the section of the road between 20 Cannon Street and the brewery at 40 Cannon Street will have 12 marked and metered parking spots on the north side of the road, just feet away from the Liberty Street parking lot starting on November 10.  The meters and new signage were installed on November 8.
To accommodate the new street parking, the double yellow lines were repainted on Cannon Street between Academy and Market Streets and the yellow markings change the location of the road’s centerline in the area of the new parking spots.
“Who would paint lines like this?” asked said motorist Tanya Harrison as she navigated Cannon Street on Wednesday afternoon.   “It looks like they changed their minds halfway through the job,”
Another driver said that the problem is that the lines are in one area, stop and jump 10 feet over for the one block then jump back to the center again without any continuation.
Mayor Robert Rolison increased the anticipated parking revenues in his 2019 budget and according to him “the new paid parking spots will not only alleviate congestion in the Liberty Street parking lot but will also bring in additional revenue.”
