KINGSTON – Former state trooper Juan Figueroa defeated incumbent Ulster County Sheriff Paul VanBlarcum.
VanBlarcum, a Democrat, was cast aside by the party, which opted instead to back Figueroa. In turn, the incumbent was cross-endorsed by the Republican Party.
In the end, the incumbent sheriff lost by some 4,000 votes.
In neighboring Orange County, it was a much different situation as Republican
Sheriff Carl DuBois ran unopposed for another term in office.
