Occupants escaped and are being assisted by the Red Cross

WAPPINGERS FALLS – Firefighters from three departments battled a stubborn two-alarm blaze in Wappingers Falls Sunday evening. The house sustained substantial smoke, fire and water damage.
New Hackensack firefighters were dispatched around 6 p.m. for a report of a fire at 10 Montfort Road. Firefighters found the blaze was rapidly spreading to the living quarters of the single-family raised ranch.
East Fishkill and Hughsonville fire departments assisted at the scene of the fire, the cause of which is under investigation.
Homeowner Ed Vessel was home at the time of the fire and escaped to a neighbor’s home. He told emergency personnel that his adult son who had been working in the garage was unaccounted for.  An interior search of the house, complicated by heavy smoke, flames and ‘hoarding’ conditions indicated that the house was empty. The son was located unharmed in the backyard of the dwelling.
The Red Cross is assisting with shelter for the occupants displaced by the fire.
Firefighters were assisted at the scene by the New York State Police, Dutchess County Sheriff’s deputies, Mobile Life Support Service ambulance and Central Hudson.
