Pete Dandreano reviews check list with Anita Manley while Sheriff

Robert Langley looks on

MAHOPAC – Police converged on the Mahopac Senior Center Thursday – not for any emergency – but to provide the ‘over 65 set’ with a better fit for their vehicles allowing for comfort, safety and mobility.
The Putnam County Traffic Safety Board conducted CarFit check-ups under the supervision of Patterson Councilman and retired Greenburgh Police Officer Peter Dandreano who explained that “CarFit provides older adults with the tools to understand and apply the safety features of their car.”
Dandreano said while concentration is often stressed towards the younger driver, “it is also critically important that mature drivers make safety a personal priority since driving today is more difficult than ever because of increased traffic congestion, longer commute distances, new technology and faster speeds.”
Trained volunteers completed a 12-point check list with the seniors. Among items reviewed were the correct position of the driver’s seat, the driver’s ability to easily reach the pedals and the proper adjustment of mirrors.
Sheriff Robert Langley, chairman of the Traffic Safety Board, described the program as being “extremely vital.” He said many people do not know how to properly adjust their vehicle in order for it to be operated safely. “The training will save lives.”
Ron Cummings of Putnam Valley, vice chairman of the board, reminded the public that “When first getting a driver’s license, reflexes are much better than they are for today’s seniors. It is most important that people of all ages realize the dangers of driving and how to use the car as a tool and not a weapon.”
Kent Police Chief Kevin Owens called it a top priority to “keep our ‘seasoned’ citizens safe. By providing them with a little extra education, we are sure they will stay safe.”
Carmel Police Lieutenant John Dearman agreed. “Today’s vehicles are filled with new technology. Many younger people are unaware of the many gadgets and devices found in their vehicles. Everything is power from steering to seats to seatbelts. It’s so important for people of all ages, young and old, to know the ‘in’s and out’s’ of their car before taking it on the road.”
