KINGSTON – An Ellenville woman has been arrested by the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office on welfare fraud charges.
Melissa DeJesus was arrested on October 4 and charged with the felonies of welfare fraud and three counts of offering a false instrument for filing.
An investigation conducted by the county Department of Social Services Special Investigation Unit, along with the district attorney, found that DeJesus filed several SNAP (food stamp) applications with DSS between March and September 2018. She reported more children in her household than were living with her, resulting in her receiving $2,016 in SNAP benefits to which she was not entitled.
She was issued an appearance ticket returnable in Ulster Town Court.
All reports of suspected fraud will be investigated. Persons may call the welfare anti-fraud and abuse hotline at 1-855-SIU-TIPS, or 855-748-8477.
