KINGSTON – It was a full reversal of the resolution adopted in June that would have given the Ulster County Legislature the authority to appoint the majority of members to the county Ethics Board.
At the time, 17 legislators voted for it.  That’s one more than would be needed to override the veto that came last month from County Executive Michael Hein.
Thursday night, 17 legislators voted against an override.
Democrat Lynn Archer was an original ‘yes’ but changed her vote Thursday night.
“With all of the issues that have been brought up over the last several days it has given me pause for concern about have we resolved this; is this the best way to approach it, and based on that, I don’t think we’re there yet,” Archer said.
Some other legislators also conceded that the original resolution had issues.
Conservative/Green lawmaker Joseph Maloney adamantly stuck with his original position and blasted the veto, saying it silences the voice of the citizens.
“And I’d like to remind everybody that it’s a referendum,” Maloney said.  “We talk about letting the people decide but we rarely do it and when 17 legislators decide to put it to the people, the executive stepped in.”
Hein will have it his way.
The vote to override failed, four in favor, 17 opposed.
