A large gathering of invited guests pack a section on the east side of the second span of the bridge
for a formal ribbon cutting
TARRYTOWN – The ribbon was cut on Friday marking the official completion of the new Governor Mario Cuomo Bridge. The second span of the bridge opened to traffic on Friday night.
The late governor’s widow, Matilda, attended a ceremony on the second span of the bridge while her son and current governor, Andrew, officiated. He took the occasion to keep up his criticism of President Trump.
“Mr. President, stop your quest to build a wall and start building bridges,” he said.
Former Senator and State Hillary Clinton, a Westchester County resident, praised the Cuomo administration for building the new bridge, saying the nation needs to build both real and metaphorical bridges.
When Matilda Cuomo and her son unveiled the plaque acknowledging the new twin span, she placed her hand on an engraved likeness of her late husband’s face.
On Friday evening, all marine traffic was stopped near the new bridge and remnant of the old Tappan Zee Bridge, a few feet away, amid concern that the remainder of the old bridge might collapse. There were reports of a partial collapse. The old bridge is being slowly dismantled.
Rockland and Westchester County police marine units and Coast Guard were on location.
